Qualification Description

This unit applies to all contexts for indoor and outdoor installation within a customer premises and applies to both customer premises cabling and customer premises equipment.

This unit applies to all communications applications whether digital or analog `including telephony, data, video including digital broadcasting, computer networks including LANs and WAN's, and multi media.

  • Training for this unit leads to an Attainment Statement required for ACMA structured Endorsement.
  • RPL Assessment by Trevor Conquest, a registered assessor is recommended for experienced cablers.

What is Structured Cabling (Cat 6 - 7)

To be competent in the installation of Structured Cabling (Cat 6) you should become a professional by completing a nationally approved course. The theory is completed on online. The final theory exams are completed online. You then complete hands on training.

Structured Cabling installation refers to the design and installation of data cables used in Local Area Networks. These networks may be small such as used in Smart Wired Homes or large as are found in Commercial Office Buildings. The cables are rated as to their electrical characteristics such as Cat 5, Cat 6 or Cat 7. The essential differences are the construction of the cables which over time have been improved to enhance the signal transmission while reducing induced crosstalk between pairs in the cable.

At the same time the termination products have also been improved and importantly these termination products are impedance matched to the cable. It is a simple rule of thumb to only use matched cable and product types, that is, Cat 6 cable is only used with Cat 6 products. It is also a good practice to match a manufacturers cable type with a manufacturers termination products.

Besides understanding the standards and testing practices the physical installation of any of these cables is identical. Cat 7 has one extra requirement and that is to use and terminate the shielding, braids/foils/drain wire, at both ends of the horizontal cables. This also means the patch cords must also be shielded style.

How we Train

Conquest Communications has developed over the years a unique online learning management system (LMS) tailored to our specific training needs. We deliver all theory through the online LMS and pair this learning with practical hands on days.

This system provides the flexibility to learners to log in at their own convenience to undertake their study. It minimises the time learners take away from work as study can be completed after hours which in turn maximises time spent on paid work. Each unit of competency is broken in to smaller sized subjects which means that the learners are not locked to the computer for large periods of time. Assignments can be uploaded directly to their profile for marking by our industry experienced trainers and assessors.

Below is a table outlining the hourly breakdown of the different delivery methods for this course. Please be advised that this is a guide only and that a learners experience level, Recognition of Prior Learning applications, personal/work commitments etc. will impact on the length required to complete this training.

2 hours online study a week  ~  1/2 day classroom attendance  ~  To be be completed in 3-6 months

NB: This course can be completed a lot quicker depending on the learners background and experience. Most of our students can complete the online study in as little as a week if they are motivated.

Our assessors are experienced in applying recognition of prior learning (RPL), so if a learner is trade qualified (even in a different field), an experienced cabler, or has completed other similar nationally recognised training, then in most cases RPL or Credit Transfers can be applied with the submission of supporting evidence.

Equipment and Tools

This training leads to trade level qualifications. Thus a good tradesman must own the appropriate test equipment to perform competently as a trade qualified person. We also appreciate that the more expensive items are often simply hired as needed by you or your company.

We supply all of the required tools and equipment for learners at their hands on training days.

Fees

In accordance with the ASQA 2015 standards for RTO's we do not collect more than $1500 in prepaid fees for our courses.

As this course is not above this amount the full fee will be required upon registration.

See our Policies for more indepth information of our policies around fees, refunds, cancelations etc.

Training Locations

We’re a Nationally Recognised Training Organisation and can train all over Australia. All our training gear is transportable increasing our ability to train in many places other companies can't go. We have experienced and qualified Trainers who travel across Queensland each year conducting our training and full time trainers in Brisbane and Bundaberg. We also have Trainers in other states.

For Training outside of the above mentioned locations and in other states please call us first and we’ll let you know where the closest trainer is to you and how quickly we might be able to line up the schedule to meet your training needs. If you sign up 5 or more learners we can travel to you and deliver the hands on training in your own workshop. For an additional fee, we can also attend your workplace to deliver training if you do not have the 5 or more learners. These training days at your workplace can include the weekend to minimise the loss of your normal weekday working hours.  Alternatively if you are registering as an individual, or your company has less than these numbers, we schedule courses in the major towns throughout the year, and your learners can attend these sessions.

Due to the unpredictable nature of regional training, Regional learners purchasing Conquest training must be aware that our guarantee to deliver the training as close to them as possible is only valid for the first year of their enrollment. If after 1 year they have not finished their training (hands on component) we reserve the right to request that they travel to our nearest training location at their expense. We would not ask this lightly and it would only occur if the Trainer in the learner’s location is unable to complete the training due to health, personal/professional issues or they are no longer working for Conquest Communications. Where possible prior notice to learners would be provided.

Hands on Training Days

All up depending on your previous experience this qualification requires approx. 1/2 half day of practical hands on training/assessment. In some cases the hands on day assessment may be wavered for experienced cablers who can show evidence they have the necessary skills and knowledge. If you have current certification that shows competency in any of the following units you do not need to complete the allocated hands on day.

Structured and Coaxial cabling practical training requirements are combined in to one ½ day session – approx. 4 hours.

  • ICTCBL301 Install, terminate and certify structured cabling installation
  • ICTCBL303 Install and terminate coaxial cable

Inexperienced Cablers –

  • Inexperienced cablers may need additional face to face hands on training or
  • Inexperienced cablers will still need to complete training with CCC Trainers as outlined above.

Booking in Hands on Training Days

If you sign up 5 or more Learners we can travel to you and deliver the hands on training onsite at your workplace. For an additional fee, less than 5 learners can be accommodated and the training venue be at your workshop. Alternatively if you have less than these numbers or are registering as an individual, throughout the year we schedule courses in major cities/towns and you can attend these sessions.

Additional fees may apply if you require the hands on training component urgently outside our scheduled sessions.

Please call 4159 6950 to find out the hands on training delivery scheduled.
